Shanghai, China – Early May this year a delegation led by the Minister of Economic Development of Curaçao, Drs. Steven Martina, arrived in Beijing, China. The delegation comprised representatives of the ‘Stichting Ontwikkeling Projecten Logistieke Sector’ (SLS), which is a foundation for development projects in the logistics sector, some government LLC’s, as well as representatives of the private sector.

The aim of this economic mission was threefold. Firstly to promote Curaçao as the logistics hub for Chinese companies to Latin America. Secondly to offer the Chinese producers who may wish to assemble their products in Curaçao and / or to showcase them to customers in the region the opportunity to do so. Lastly the mission was also intended to promote potential business locations, economic investment projects and financial services that Curaçao has to offer.

This trademission was organized following an investigation performed by Melenco in late 2012, commissioned by SLS. During this study more than 150 Chinese companies have shown their interest in Curaçao. The economic mission consisted of two conferences held in Beijing and Shanghai, match-making sessions with Chinese companies and visitations of Chinese companies.

The delegation from Curaçao got a good impression of what the Chinese market has to offer and has already established contacts with potential companies interested in investment projects. Upon return to Curaçao, SLS will follow up consultations with the contacts that were made in China and start preparing a mission from China to Curaçao in collaboration with Melenco (Shanghai & Curaço) and the Curaçao Chamber of Commerce & Industry.
